Rings around Saturn

The Sega Saturn..... what's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of this console? Some of the 1st thoughts most "in-the-know" folks think or say is that Sega rushed it to market, it was an under powered machine, there was no games to attract buyers, loading times took forever, does it play cartridge games from the 32x/Genesis.... and so on.

Well I'm here to tell you: "You're wrong"! This console is a beast in its own right. Although, most of the Sega Saturn's catalog never made it out of Japan, America got roughly ⅓ of the total 1028, games released, here and of that only 15 of them were solely released in North America by the time Sega had moved on to the Dreamcast. In the end of the Saturn's lifespan there were more canceled games for the Saturn than there was exclusive North American releases.

My experience with the Saturn up, until recently had been very little. I had bought my console 2nd hand from a friend a few months before his untimely death and stored this machine away in its original box for the last 20 years. Jeff, the guy I bought it off of didn't have it long or played it very much. He essentially did what most American gamers did, bought a Playstation and then a Playstation 2.

So finally 30 years after the Saturn made its debut to America, after hearing about Optical Drive Emulation (ODE), I finally broke it out of its cardboard cage after being trapped in a closet for 20+ years, ordered a Saroo ODE pre-loaded with some random games on a microSD card from China! At first I didn't know what to think. As I said beforehand, my experience with the Saturn was very little, aside from some of the Model 3 Sega Arcade games Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally, Daytona USA, to name a few.

I loaded up the Saroo, hit the power switch and after loading and navigating the pages of games and about 30 minutes of playtime.... I instantly filled with regret! Regretted having not spent much time with the Sega Saturn or its Games library! I tried out the obvious games, Sega Rally, Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter and then onwards to some Capcom fighting games of Street Fighter Alpha, X Men: Children of Atom and Marvel VS. Capcom! I was totally mindblown of the quality of the games and the way they played.  I wish I would have been an earlier adopter of this system after all these years of ownership having neglected this awesome console!!!!

So now with an ODE equipped in my Saturn, amd after a week of getting it set up & downloading games that weren't included on the card, I have finally came up with my main mission: To Play Every American Release as they came out!!! All 258 games!!!

Keep in mind there are a few rules to this whole process I feel is the fair way of doing things that I'll list below. There are a few titles that I'll be playing adjacent to this whole mission in spare time or for fun that isn't an American Release, these do not count towards the overall goal. I want to experience the Saturn as the average gamer in 1995 would've as the games were trickling out to the market. The only advantage that I have here is I don't have to wait for the next release(s) to hit, they all are loading from a memory card so that cuts the loading time, and I have the benefit of Bluetooth technology and am not tethered to the console with a 6ft cord hooked to the controller.

1) - I have to play American released titles (other regions games can substituted in lieu for better soundtracks, optimized difficulty or general accessibility to said titles) but I have to play them all, in order of release and cannot move on from the batch of a maximum of 3 games at a time, in rotation, until 1 has been beaten or is able to be moved on from, then it can be replaced by the next game on the list in order it was released in America.

2) - I have to try to beat every title I play to the best of my ability and the games functionality as some games are unbeatable or have no completion or finally. There will be certain criteria that has to be met in order to "move on" to the next title to get through the 258 officially released titles that graced the hardware.

a) - I can only use resources that were available at the time of the Saturn being on the market. Meaning, no YouTube video hints, no GameShark codes (as the cartridge slot is occupied by the Saroo), no codes or cheats (only in game exploits can be used), no save states or other save files generated by other players or trainer programs or hacks!

b) - Sports games are pretty well an infinite experience,  I have to play and win against the computer in a best of 3 matches to count a sports game as played. Racing games don't have to be completed 100% or hold top records, but I do have to race every available track, win podium placement (track, series) in order to move onwards to the next title.

3) - Unreleased games and homebrewed games do not count towards the final goal of playing them all, as they weren't officially released nor were available for purchase before the Saturn was discontinued in North America.

Eventually, I will get through them all. Unfortunately I'd rather play the games from physical disk, but the used market prices for many of these games goes well over $1,000 (Magic Knight Rayearth, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Megamall 8 & x3). So luckily the Saroo mitigates the loading times, but not always compatible with every game in its current state of firmware. Which brings me to the next portion of this goal, to aid the Saroo team in compatibility checks for playability for the complete title in question to assure others the ODE is in fact compatible with the retail released games and to document issues and incompleteness of compatibility. This is eventually going to improve the overall usefulness of the ODE in question.

I may end up documenting this project via YouTube in a series of videos and reviews for the hardware, papherials and games. There will most definitely be "in print" semi regular posts made here in my blogging...

Mike "Am-Rep" Hummel - (Personal Face Book page Post) Wednesday at 8:11pm
"Gabriel needs to hear from Jim's fans (that means YOU) that he needs to get VINYL out on the market - he is a metal kid & only knows CDs & downloads - tell him who you you are what you do - every voice he hears (along with an expression of love for his Dad's music) will be a positive thing - SILTBREEZE is there just waiting to help him out once he "gets it".....????"

Firstly MIKE HUMMEL

(any one else that feels the need), you should know where I come from!!!! I am not just some DUMB ASS "METAL KID"..... I DO plan on re-releasing ALL Iron Press material on VINYL!!!!!!!

Digital IS the future!!! And the future is NOW!!!!

I do realize that records have made a resurgence in being the "preferred" media format for Audio Files!!!! (as in collectors). I do believe in "tried and true" & "Proven" formats in audio duplication..... thus I am not clamoring for RE-RELEASE on CASSETTE or 8-Track Tape for that matter...... I am ACTUALLY OVER LOOKING CD as a viable option for these reasons

1) CD are a WASTE of money, B/c people only want portability and vitality of a format!!!! Thus RECORD is the better option there

2) CD's aren't cost effective enough to to nessitate the expense of paying out of pocket to only look at them sitting stagnate in my warehouse storage space when Mp3 is the way to go for DIGITAL Audio REPRODUCTION!!!!!

And I am not really crazy about OVER producing anything either.... I am more than willing to work with Siltbreeze. I have already been in contact with T.J. Lax...... just talked to him today as a matter of fact! Been talking to him.... how do you think that "Vertical Slit - Under the blood Red Lava Lamp" got the GREEN LIGHT? It didn't just happen BEHIND my back ..... UNLIKE SO MANY OTHER 'PROJECTS" that I said NO to, and you fucks just went and did ANY WAY!!!!!!!  I understand that your guys' hearts were in the "right" spot...... but no royalties?(In To the Ether"The Jim Shepard 'Tribute'", "Slit and Pre Slit - self titled", Skull Bank, V-3 'Last Album" all the torrents, and FREE downloads) Hmmmm, I am severely pissed still about that. And it has nothing to do with money, it is all about PRINCIPALS!!!!!!

You all were my father & Mothers FRIENDS & Colleagues..... and fans. It is just the same as breaking in to my house and stealing my own equipment..... there is no difference, staling is stealing PERIOD!!!!!

No to sound like Forest Gump here, but just for prosperity......

THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT!

Sincerily,

So after much careful consideration. . . . .

The Iron Press is back and running again! My father had a record label that he used to produce his own music from and the Iron Press was it. Well after 13 years of nothing. Now things are on the move again. I am so tired of watching all these vultures pluck away at his bones and steal his music, it is time, NOW!

So for all the people that always were there with a beer and a dubbers for him.... and since decided that giving away his career was the best thing for his family, and fans....... SCREW YOU ALL!!!!

I know that there are different arrangements for various projects, and albums. But I never thought that giving the shit away was ever really an idea. You know it costs money to produce music (i.e. - strings, sticks, pic's, guitars, amps, tubes, drums, cymbals exc......so on), let alone the costs to get it to the masses in the forms of production of records, tape and CD!!!!

This stuff should be heard, but not for FREE in the form of torrents, bootlegs and piracy! I doubt that if Jim Shepard were standing here in the flesh that many of you would be doing it like that. Making a tape or burning a CD isn't as blatant as making a torrent or posting a FILESHARE link and just letting the world give a go at it.

I AM FED UP!!!!

So now as result, I am going to systematicly go through all mean unnecessary to get it all removed / taken down from the net. What is out there already in the ways / forms of piracy fine! You all had your turn, now it is me and mine's turn to do it, THE RIGHT WAY!!!!

Jim Shepard's LEGACY will live on, just not by the means of the past presidence of the foreverlowmanblog (YOU ARE A DOUCHE BAG, YOU RAT ASS HOLE!)

By all means, keep it alive in the forms of web posts on OFFICIAL web pages listed below, or make a "youtube" video up load of a show you were fortunate enough to be able to tape.... that stuff is useful, and there is even fewer of those than that of  actual copies of media put out by my father!

Moving work spaces

So I have been planning on occupying the back room in my house since we moved in to our house. Finally today I did. It was an all day affair and I still am not done yet. I still have some organizing to do, wspecially since it also sort of unpacking for me too. Most of my "office" type stuff has been in boxes and totes for close to 4 years now. So I am finding all kinds of stuff!!!!

So now at least I have a semi-peaceful place to work on things or make a public disturbance from. Any way, away we go...... time to do some action script...... in the learning process.

Going to be a long day for sure.

No sleep and I am not getting any until later on tonight! Yea!!!

Day 0

So here is my new Blog site.... I used to blog here and there on My Space..... but I haven't for quite some time. This is where I am doing it now.

So as of late I have been fascinated with Adobe Flash. I used to have a issues about Adobe absorbing all the great design software companies and tossing aside their main IP's for just a feature of one or just a product of their line. Big fish eating little fish......

After watching the webcast from Adobe MAX convention in LA. My thoughts are completely changed now that Flash has seen probably the largest single see the video below......

Fast forward to around 70 minutes to see the really cool stuff!!!!!

Epic Games UT3 in FLASH

So I have been teaching myself Action Script 3 the past few days. It is a far cry from HTML4.0..... ha ha
But this truly did inspire me beyond the games that I played while I was growing up.
